I'm David Carpenter.  I studied Business Studies at what was then the North East London Polytechnic, and is probably a University by now.  My first career was in industry--first as a Management Trainee, then in the Sales and Marketing division of a major motor manufacturing company.  I moved to the Sales Division of a large pharmaceutical company, but never found commercial work satisfying or fulfilling. 

I decided on a new career in social work.  After several years as an unqualified residential social worker I trained in Social Work at Coventry University.  After qualifying, I worked as a social worker for a major children's charity, then for the Social Services Department of a local authority in the Midlands.  I trained as a hypnotherapist at that time.

In 1990, I began practising in a small way as a therapist.  At the same time, I moved to the Probation Service, and became a Probation Officer.  I also began training in an approach to psychotherapy called NLP--an approach to communication that also has many business applications.

In 1996, I was dissatisfied with certain changes in the work of the Probation Service.  I decide to use my marketing training to develop the therapy practice (which had so far been a very part-time hobby) into a serious business. I designed the logo and image of the practice, and began advertising.  The following year, the practice was busy enough that I needed to become very part-time as a Probation Officer or collapse with overwork!  The practice has continued to grow and that growth accelerated rapidly in 1998, when the practice website was established for the first time.  Please take a look--it's Website 1 in the links on the left. 

A psychotherapy institute, the British Institute of Provocative Therapy, retains me as Marketing Consultant.  I design their publicity and advertising material and website.  I have their permission to say so--other companies and businesspeople I work for will not be named unless/until I have their permission!  (This includes you)  Their Website is Website 2 on the left. 

I still work for around a day a week as a Probation Officer, but the therapy practice here has for many years been my main living.
