says:
I was playing piano in a piano bar in San Francisco when this redhead came
up and asked me for a request. What would have happened if I hadn't known
it? But thus began our relationship! We moved down to LA, where Michelle
worked as a dress-designer and maker. I continued playing in restaurants,
and eventually landed one of the plum jobs in the area - the guy
who'd been playing there had been there 18 years and was retiring. Although
this was a great opportunity, I only stayed there a few months - I could see
my life disappearing over the horizon!' So I said to Michelle one day 'Why
don't we just go to England for a while?'
We started off in London. Michelle got a job as legal secretary in a
prominent law firm in Lincolns Inn. I continued plying my trade in such
hostelries as the Dorchester and the Carlton Towers . Most people would
have thought I was making a fortune playing in such places, but it just
about paid the rent - but at least I got free food!
Anyway, after about six months I unfortunately broke the little finger on
my left hand. While I was recovering, we decided to decamp down to Cornwall
for a few weeks. When I was OK, I just - out of morbid interest- rang a
local agent to see if there was any piano work around. It turned out there
was loads. In the meantime, I finally convinced Michelle to get a proper
job, and so we formed the duo - MICHELLE AND JEFF. We really had to agonize
to come up with that, I can tell you.
Very quickly, we established ourselves down here. For some years, we used
to work in Newquay - several different places - Spring, Summer and Autumn,
then go off abroad in the winter. We traveled to some fabulous places,
including India, the Middle East, Morocco, Spain , Scandinavia and Ireland.
Then we were offered the residency at the Headland--and we've been there
ever since!
